Electronic Music Composers Competition for High School Students in the Northeast

The Music Technology program of the Music Department, Northeastern University, Boston is pleased to announce an electronic-music composition contest for high school composers from the Northeast. The first prize will be a cash award of $250 and a performance of the winning work on a public concert at Northeastern in Boston in Spring, 2008. The second place winner will receive an award of $100 and a public performance of their work. Both winners will also receive a free copy of Cakewalk's Sonar 7 Producer Edition and Garritan's Personal Orchestra sample library. The music departments of both winners will also receive a copy of both programs. Additional awards will be given at the judges' discretion.

Contest Rules
1. Applicants must be full-time students in an accredited high school, grades 9 - 12, in one of the following states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
2. Only one entry per composer is allowed.
3. Works must be at least 3 minutes in length but no more than 10 minutes in length.
4 . Works must be submitted on an audio CD, which should be labeled with the composer's name and contact info (email and telephone).
5 . Applicants must be the sole creators of work.
6 . Works must use either computer-generated or computer-processed sound as a major component or consist of sound created on an electronic musical instrument such as a synthesizer or sampler. Works that combine acoustic instruments and electronic or computer sound are acceptable.
7. Works performed entirely by acoustic instruments that are mixed on a computer are not allowed.
8. Loop-based works are not encouraged, but will be considered.
9. Any application that does not meet these guidelines will not be considered.

On a separate piece of paper, applicants must type the following information and submit it with their entry:
1. First name
2. Last name
3. Address
4. City
5. State
6. Phone
7. Email
8. Name of school and city it is in
9. Year of graduation
10. Name of composition
11. Length of composition
12. Date composition completed
13. Hardware/software used

2008 Deadline for receipt of works at Northeastern is March 17, 2008.

Do not send an original copy - only send a duplicate of the work. CDs will not be returned. Include a self-addressed, stamped postcard if you wish to be notified that your work has been received.
